Northchurch CC are sad to announce the passing of Alan Fantham, peacefully in Watford General Hospital on New Year’s Day aged 82.

Alan was a passionate cricketer, working tirelessly on and off the pitch in order to provide Northchurch with the facilities and strength of character it has today.

Born in the village in 1935, just a cricket ball’s throw from the ground, Alan followed in his father’s footsteps in joining a club he was destined to transform.

His playing career was exceptional, taking over 3,500 wickets, scoring over 27,000 runs and taking a few hundred catches as well! Off the field, Alan gave decades of service as groundsman, captain, secretary (37 years) and so much more. He inspired generations of Northchurch children to get involved in the game he loved and even during his last few days in hospital, was more concerned with the club’s well-being than his own health!

He will be sorely missed and the club would like to thanks members and friends for the hundreds of kind messages received over the last few days.

His funeral will be held at St Mary’s Church, Northchurch on Saturday 27th January at 11am and fittingly afterwards, at Northchurch’s cricket ground for refreshments.
