No flake in Gaz's 99

Eversholt got off to flyer after winning the toss on a nailed-on batting day and reached three figures after just 17 overs. DJ’s wicket served to only increase the run rate with number 3, Ian, keen to get on with it.

Pace off the ball turned Church’s fortunes around. Saf’s safe hands at extra cover got rid of the big hitter when he eyed up an OJ length ball. The introduction of spin further slowed things down and wickets began to tumble as batters tried to move things along.

The captain chipped Khan to Hobes at midwicket, before Hobes himself got in on the action by removing the opener for a well made 75. The innings somewhat fizzled out as Eversholt collapsed from 165/4 to 220 all out. The return of DJ at the end mopped up the tail.

The visitors’ opening bowlers hit some challenging areas and it looked like it was game on when Northchurch lost two early wickets. However, the capable partnership of Liveing and Garraway navigated the remaining threat from the new ball, before cashing in on a flat pitch.

George was watchful and rotated the strike, his 82* coming from 128 balls, Garraway aggressive as ever, punishing the change bowlers with three big sixes. When the latter reached 99 from 76 balls, only six runs were needed and he was not on strike. George tried to do his mate a favour by blocking out a maiden, but six extras brought an end to the match and robbed Tom of a eighth league ton.

The character of the team to pull Eversholt back after a fast start was particularly impressive and the place at the top of the league table seemed well earned. More character will be needed as we go into the second half of the season as the division is heading toward a tight finish.
